Psychic or Medium? Understanding the Difference

One of the most common misconceptions in the spiritual world is that psychics and mediums are the same.

While the two abilities are closely connected, they are not identical.

A simple way to understand the relationship is this:

All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums.

Why?

Because every medium must first develop their psychic awareness before they can communicate with the spirit world. However, many psychics choose to work solely with the energy of the living and never develop mediumship.

Let’s explore the difference.

What Is a Psychic?

A psychic works with the energy of the living.

Everything in the universe is energy, and every person carries an energetic blueprint made up of their thoughts, emotions, experiences, and soul purpose. A psychic intuitively reads this energy, receiving information about a person’s life, relationships, emotions, opportunities, and sometimes their most likely future based on their current path.

This is achieved by tuning into the vibration of another living person.

Because both the psychic and the client exist within the same physical world, their energetic frequencies are already quite similar. The psychic simply becomes aware of the information already contained within that person’s energy field.

Many psychics receive information through the intuitive senses, known as the clairs:

• Clairvoyance (clear seeing)

• Clairaudience (clear hearing)

• Clairsentience (clear feeling)

• Claircognizance (clear knowing)

Working on this earthly vibration is generally less physically demanding because the psychic does not need to significantly alter their own vibration. However, highly empathic psychics can still become emotionally or physically tired if they absorb too much of another person’s energy.

What Is a Medium?

A medium is first and foremost a psychic.

However, a medium has developed the additional ability to communicate with those who have passed into the spirit world.

Rather than reading the energy of the living, a medium intentionally connects with an intelligent communicator in spirit.

Spirit exists at a much finer, lighter vibration than our physical world. For communication to take place, the medium raises their own vibration while the spirit communicator lowers theirs. Together they meet in a shared energetic space—a bridge between two realms.

This is why the term medium is so fitting.

The medium literally becomes the bridge between the physical world and the spirit world.

This energetic adjustment requires effort from both the medium and the spirit communicator, which is why mediumship can often be mentally, emotionally, and physically demanding.

It is a partnership between two worlds.

All Mediums Are Psychic… But Not All Psychics Are Mediums

This is perhaps the easiest way to remember the difference.

Every medium uses psychic ability.

Before a medium can perceive the presence of spirit, they first use their psychic senses to become aware of subtle energy. Mediumship builds upon psychic ability—it doesn’t replace it.

However, many psychics never work with spirit communication.

Their passion may lie in providing guidance about relationships, career, life purpose, healing, or personal growth by reading the energy of the living.

That doesn’t make them any less gifted.

It simply means they specialise in a different aspect of intuitive work.

Can Someone Be Both?

Absolutely.

Many practitioners describe themselves as psychic mediums because they work comfortably in both ways.

A reading may begin psychically, exploring your current life circumstances and energy, before naturally transitioning into mediumship if a loved one in spirit wishes to communicate.

Although both abilities use intuition, the source of the information is different.

Psychic information comes from the energy field of the living person.

Mediumistic information comes directly from an individual in the spirit world.

Understanding this distinction helps explain why the experiences—and the purpose of each type of reading—can feel very different.

What Is the Purpose of Mediumship?

Traditionally, mediumship has been viewed as providing evidence that life continues after physical death.

Evidence is undoubtedly important.

Names, memories, personalities, shared experiences, and unique details all help demonstrate that our loved ones continue to exist beyond physical life.

However, I believe mediumship is about much more than proving survival.

A medium’s role is to become a messenger between two realms.

Once the connection has been established, spirit often wishes to share guidance, encouragement, healing, reassurance, wisdom, and sometimes practical advice for those they continue to love.

Our responsibility is to faithfully deliver whatever they wish to communicate—not only evidence of their continued existence, but also the love, support, and guidance they still have for those on Earth.

The Common Purpose

Whether working as a psychic or as a medium, the intention is ultimately the same—to help others.

Psychic readings can provide clarity, direction, and insight into life’s challenges.

Mediumship can bring comfort, healing, hope, validation, and the reassurance that love continues beyond physical death.

Both remind us that we are far more than our physical bodies.

Both encourage us to trust ourselves, deepen our spiritual awareness, and recognise that we are part of something much greater than we often realise.

Final Thoughts

Psychic ability and mediumship are closely connected, but they are not the same.

A psychic connects with the energy of the living.

A medium connects with both the living and the spirit world.

That’s why the saying remains one of the simplest and most accurate ways to understand the difference:

All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums.

Understanding this distinction helps us appreciate the unique role each practitioner plays.

Whether seeking guidance from a psychic or comfort from a medium, both offer valuable insight, healing, and a deeper connection to the unseen world around us.
