In 1612, twelve people from the Pendle area were accused of witchcraft and linked to alleged deaths said to have been caused by supernatural means. Eleven reached trial: ten were convicted and executed, one was acquitted, and Elizabeth Southerns—known as Demdike—died in prison before her case was heard.

The proceedings became some of the most famous witch trials in English history. Families were divided, neighbours gave evidence against neighbours and a child’s testimony played a decisive role. Today, the story is remembered not only as dark folklore, but as a human tragedy shaped by fear, poverty, belief and the justice system of the time.

Pendle’s villages, churchyards, woodland and exposed hillside have accumulated generations of paranormal reports and local legends—from unexplained figures and footsteps to sudden emotion, shadowy movement and the feeling of an unseen presence.
