Once recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as Britain’s most haunted village, Pluckley is associated with at least twelve reported spirits. Behind its peaceful lanes, ancient church and beautiful Kent countryside lies a collection of tragic stories and chilling encounters that have drawn paranormal investigators for decades.
Pluckley — The Village of Ghosts
During the day and after darkness falls, we will explore the locations and stories connected to some of Pluckley’s best-known reported hauntings.
🔴 The Red Lady
Traditionally identified as a member of the Dering family, the Red Lady is said to wander the churchyard of St Nicholas’ Church, searching for the grave of her stillborn child.
⚪ The White Lady
Another mysterious female figure associated with the Dering family and the church. She has reportedly appeared inside the church and around the family’s burial place.
🐎 The Phantom Coach
The sound and apparition of a horse-drawn coach have reportedly been experienced travelling through the village—sometimes appearing before vanishing without explanation.
🌿 The Water-Cress Woman
The spirit of a woman traditionally named Susan Richardson is said to appear near Pinnock Bridge, where local folklore claims she died after accidentally setting herself alight.
🪢 The Highwayman of Fright Corner
A phantom highwayman is said to appear near the crossroads known as Fright Corner, where legend claims he was killed and pinned to a tree.
🗣️ The Screaming Man
The anguished cries of a man believed to have died in an accident have reportedly been heard around the site of Pluckley’s former brickworks.
👤 Shadows, Footsteps & Watching Presences
Across the village, visitors continue to report unexplained footsteps, fleeting figures, sudden cold areas and the unmistakable feeling that they are not alone.
The Screaming Woods
As darkness takes over, our journey moves towards Dering Wood—better known throughout paranormal folklore as the Screaming Woods.
By day, it is an atmospheric ancient woodland. By night, it becomes something very different.
Visitors have reported disembodied screams travelling through the trees, footsteps following them along otherwise empty paths, whispering voices, unexplained lights and shadowy figures moving between the trunks.
Some describe sudden feelings of fear, confusion or being watched. Others claim the woodland can become unnaturally silent immediately before activity begins.
Stories attempting to explain the screams have developed over many years, but their true origin remains uncertain.
We will enter without assuming what we will find—and allow the woodland to reveal its own story.

Our experience begins at 12pm with a welcome, safety briefing and introduction to Pluckley’s history. Throughout the afternoon, evening and night, we will explore locations connected to the village’s most famous hauntings before completing our investigation around the Screaming Woods.

Event Details
Advance booking is required and places are limited. The full meeting point, route, parking information and what-to-bring list will be provided after booking.
Please be prepared for a long outdoor event involving walking, uneven ground, woodland paths, darkness and cold November weather. Warm waterproof clothing, strong footwear and a reliable torch will be essential.
Some locations may require travel by car. All investigations will be conducted respectfully and only where access is legally permitted.
